How and where to apply for a Certificate of Marital License

Where to apply

You have to apply for a Certificate of Marital License at the local municipality if both you and your partner meet one of the following criteria:

  • You are a Danish citizen
  • You are a citizen in a Nordic country (i.e. Finland, Sweden, Norway or Island)
  • You have a permanent residence permit, issued in Denmark
  • You have an obtained a permanent residence right under the Directive 2004/38/EC implemented in Danish law as “EU-Opholdsbekendtgørelsen”

If you not meet the abovementioned criteria, you have to send an application for a Certificate of Marital License to the State Administration.

This is the case if you or your partner respectively are not Danish citizens, citizens from a Nordic country or if you do not have a permanent residence permit in Denmark or have obtained a permanent residence right under the Directive 2004/38/EC implemented in Danish law as "EU-Opholdsbekendtgørelsen.”
  

Conditions for foreign couples in connection with being married in Denmark or abroad

If you want to get married in Denmark, you have to meet the conditions in the "Ægteskabsloven” (i.e. the Danish Act on the Formation and Dissolution of Marriage). You can find further info on the law here (in Danish).
  

The application

If you want to get married in Denmark, you have to send an application along with a declaration of marriage to the State Administration and pay an administration fee.

If you meet the conditions we issue you a Certificate of Marital License.

A Certificate of marital status is valid for 4 months from the date of issue. If the parties are not married within this period, the Marriage Certificate expires and the parties must apply again. In case of a new application, all documents must be submitted and the fee of 1650, - paid again.
  

Digital self-service

If one of you have access to NemID, you have to use the digital application form provided by the State Administration. You have to log on and sign your application with your NemID. The other party can either use NemID or the SMS-login service.

If you do not have NemID, you can also use the application form provided by the State Administration by using an SMS-login service.

You also have the option of letting a third party represent you. If you wish the former, you will have to sign a power of attorney, stating that the third party may represent you. Please note that you still must sign the declaration of marriage as a sworn declaration yourself.

The third party, who is entitled to represent you, can also use the digital self-service solution provided by the State Administration, either by using NemID or the SMS-login service. If a Danish CVR is given in the application of the third party all mail will be sent to the secure Company mailbox.

If you do not wish to use the digital application form, you can print out the declaration of marriage, which can be accessed from 1st January of 2019 on the homepage of the State Administration. Please send the filled out application form along with the relevant documentation to us.

Administration fee

You must pay an administration fee under the Danish Act on the Formation and Dissolution of Marriage. The administration fee is set and yearly regulated by the minister for children and social affairs.

The administration fee must be paid either via a bank transfer or by credit card. The State Administration cannot start processing your application before having received the administration fee.

The administration pr. 1st of January 2019 is 1.650 Danish Kroner, approximately 220 €.
