Marriage for couples from abroad

På dansk: Ægteskab for internationale par
Auf deutsch: Eheschließungen für ausländische Paare in Dänemark

Before you can get married in Denmark you need to have a Certificate of Marital Status.

Where can we apply?

You have to apply for a Certificate of Marital License at The Danish State Administration if either you or your partner:

  • are not a Danish citizen nor a citizen in a Nordic country (i.e. Finland, Sweden, Norway or Island)
  • do not have a permanent residence permit, issued in Denmark
  • do not have a permanent residence certificate under the Directive 2004/38/EC implemented in Danish law as “EU-Opholdsbekendtgørelsen”

Otherwise you can apply at your local municipality.
But only if you and your partner are both Danish—or Nordic—citizens, you have a permanent residence permit that has been issued in Denmark or you have a permanent residence certificate under the Directive 2004/38/EC implemented in Danish law as “EU-Opholdsbekendtgørelsen”.

You can find further information about the Danish municipalities here

If you not meet the abovementioned criteria, you have to send an application for a Certificate of Marital License to the State Administration.

This is the case if you or your partner respectively are not Danish citizens, citizens from a Nordic country or if you do not have a permanent residence permit in Denmark or have a permanent residence certificate under the Directive 2004/38/EC implemented in Danish law as "EU-Opholdsbekendtgørelsen.”

Conditions for foreign couples in connection with being married in Denmark or abroad

If you need a Marriage Certificate in order to get married outside of Denmark you need to meet the conditions in The Danish Formation and Dissolution of Marriage Act before we can issue the certificate to you.

If you want to get married in Denmark, you have to meet the conditions written in the "Ægteskabsloven” (The Danish Formation and Dissolution of Marriage Act).
You can find further information about the law here (in Danish)

The application

If you want to get married in Denmark, you have to send an application— a Notice of Marriage—to The Danish State Administration and pay an administration fee.

If you meet the conditions we will issue you a Certificate of Marital Status or a Marriage Certificate, depending on whether the marriage is to be carried out in Denmark or abroad.

A Certificate of Marital Status/Marriage Certificate is valid for 4 months from the issue date. If you are not married within this period, the certificate expires and you must reapply. In case of a new application, all documents must be resubmitted and the fee of 1,650 Danish kroner (DKK) must be paid again.

Digital self-service

If both of you have access to NemID, then you have to use the digital application form provided by The Danish State Administration. You have to log in and sign your application with your NemID.

If you fill it out together and only one of you have NemID, you can choose to log on with NemID or choose to use SMS-login.

If you do not fill it out together, and the other party does not have NemID, you still need to fill out the digital application and log on with your NemID. The other party will, in this case, receive an email for the SMS-login.

If you have been exempted from Digital Post, from the public sector, you may print out the forms.

If you do not have NemID, you can also use the application form provided by The Danish State Administration by using an SMS-login service.

You also have the option of letting a third party represent you. If you wish the former, you will have to sign a power of attorney, stating that the third party may represent you. Please note that you still must sign the Notice of Marriage as a sworn declaration yourself.

The third party, who is entitled to represent you, can also use the digital self-service solution provided by The Danish State Administration by using the SMS-login service.
